This is one of the cards I have a love-hate relationship with because in the context of reading, there really isn’t a wealth of information contained in the image.
ASTROLOGY: Aquarius, Pisces, Scorpio
PLANETS: Neptune, Jupiter, Pluto, Mars.
TIMING: 9th - 22nd March.
Divinatory Meaning - Known as the “wish card”, the 9 of Cups represents physical contentment and fulfillment. It can also represent good health, a sense of well-being, success, achievement and satisfaction and sensual pleasures. “Whatever your true heart’s desires will come into your life.”
Upright Keywords (U) - generosity, contentment, personal satisfaction, material gains, advantage.
A few upright interpretations:
Your actions will revolve around emotions and suggests a time of satisfaction and pleasure.
Depending on it’s position in a spread, the 9 of Cups may indicate the your wishes may come true and/or that something you’ve worked hard for may soon come to fruition.
Reversed Keywords (R) - poor judgment, mistakes, errors, a lack of humility, complacency.
A few reversed interpretations:
Reversed, the 9 of Cups may be a warning to you that all may not be as it seems. Situations may not be as secure as your assume, nor friendships/relationships not as close as you’d like.
The 9 of Cups reversed may be an indication that you are being/have been acting in selfish, careless manner in regards to a victory. This can lead to mistakes being made and errors of judgment.
Appearing reversed in a spread, the 9 of Cups may be telling you that your plans will not go accordingly due to insufficient funds for a personal need or project. You will have to wait for a more auspicious time.
The reason I have a love-hate relationship with this card is because it never “tells” me anything deeper “than it’s called the wish card”. In fact, I feel that this card offers more information reversed than it does upright, so interpreting the card in an upright position requires a certain level of subtlety - particularly when surrounded by multiple Major Arcana cards. The reader must be very sensitive to the energies contained in the spread *and* to the timing of the event(s). With this last, the Reader must be very careful in interpreting the messages.
